The Nature of Nature Photography:
We are surrounded by nature and landscapes - natural or man made.
The photographs of these vast and varied subjects has different interpretations.
Most of the photographs of these subjects are of Documentary nature - for
example - a tourist admiring a scene/structure - and photographs it as a
documentation of the visit. Also a professional photographer takes
documentary photographs, with historical and aesthetic view point in mind -
such as photographing an old growth forest and new growth or a reforested
area. Another aspect of Nature/Landscape photography is Fine Art - which
represents the photographer’s interpretation of the subject. This is
achieved by use of various techniques at the time the photograph is taken
or during the darkroom process and in the era of advancing digital
technologies by use of digital tools. There is also a spiritual aspect of
photographing the vast variety of wonders surrounding us. These photographs
are designed to give a feeling of “being there” and also experience the
serenity and inner peace that surrounds the subject.
Outward bound - Inner journey:
The photographer, Daksha Patel, hopes to achieve all three aspects of nature
photography, every time she picks up the camera. Whether a photograph is of
a Majestic Mountain at sunset in the Glacier national park, a close up of a
flower in the backyard or a cowboy ranch – in addition to story-telling and
aesthetics, the feeling of serenity and inner peace is the result she is
looking for. This has not been achieved over night. The practice of being
one with the surroundings and trying to capture the feeling in the form of
a photograph has been a long but pleasant experience for her. She also knows
a still long road of Inner journey is ahead. As someone once said, “The
longest journey for anyone in life is the journey inward (Author unknown)”.
